History of Dempster
Dempster Industries, Inc., originally known as Dempster Mill
Manufacturing Company was founded in 1878 by Mr. Charles B. Dempster.
At this time, the civil war was over and many American and Immigrant
families were heading west to take up a new life where the U.S. government
was offering them homestead land. Mr. Dempster was aware these
homesteaders would need water pumps, machinery and tools to survive
and prosper. He therefore left Chicago to settle in Beatrice, Nebraska
and on July 28, 1878 established a retail windmill and pump shop.
A manufacturing plant was built soon thereafter to produce windmills,
hand pumps, water well products and agricultural implements. During the
World War II era, Dempster participated heavily in war production by
producing more than 1-1/2 million 90-millimeter shells. Through the years,
Dempster has produced hundreds of various products and machines for the
water and agricultural industries. Dempster remains the oldest continuous
manufacturer of windmills in the United States.
Dempster continued its history of innovation in 1994 with the development
of the popular AlleyCat Trailer used for Sorting and Hauling Recyclable Solid Waste.
The recycling trailer has features unique to Dempster such as ease of
pickup towing, removable plastic bins,
self-closing access doors and handicap accessibility. The AlleyCat Trailer was originally developed
for a demonstration recycling project in cooperation with the State of
Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality and the
Nebraska Environmental Trust programs and led to the creation
of DEPCO - Dempster Environmental Products Company.
Today, recycling equipment continues to be one of the most exciting markets
for Dempster in the ever-growing recycling industry. AlleyCat
Trailers are sold under the DEPCO name throughout the United States.
